Weddings, ah the joy of meeting new people, hanging out with good friends, eating lots of food, and listening to love poems in Klingon. Huh? Klingon? Like...Star Trek Klingon? I'm getting ahead of myself.
We landing in San Francisco on Friday afternoon. Shortly after arriving, we headed into Burlingame on the search for grub. Years ago, I went to a great Mexican restaurant, that was in the area, but was unfortunately too far to walk to. In the quest to find it though, a woman on the street recommended a a Mexican restaurant named 'Hola!'. Yes, very original indeed. Thankfully, the food tasted very good, and I didn't have to go and track down the random stranger that recommended the place.
On Saturday, we met up with some of the Cleveland crew and headed into China town on the quest to find Dim Sum. Chinatown is a definite experience and we had been referred to a good Chinese restaurant. The food was great at H&G, but no Dim Sim. :( They did have a bowl of Shark Fin Soup for $75. Can you imagine spending 75 bucks on a bowl of soup? For that price, the shark better still be swimming in the bowl.
That night the bride and groom invited us out for the pre-wedding roast at Yet Wah, another great Chinese restaurant. The food was good, the company was great, and it was really funny to embarrassing stories about the bride and groom. While it was entertaining, I'm somewhat relieved that we didn't have one when we got married. Some stories are just meant to stay buried :-)
We were all worried about the weather, since the wedding was outside with no rain plan. It's always a lot of fun and very interesting going to non-traditional weddings. The groom showed up in a nice 1880's custom, gun belt and holster were handed to the father-in-law before the ceremony. The ring bearers walked down the aisle holding lightsabers as the Star Wars theme was played. There were 14 short readings, ranging from ancient blessings, to John Lennon's imagine, Star Trek quotes, a biodiesel recipe, and of course a Klingon quote spoken by a friend in who had worn a Star Trek uniform under his shirt and tie. The bride and groom definitely had a good laugh at that surprise! The ceremony was perfect for them and they laughed and smiled through the entire ceremony.
The reception was also non-traditional, forgoing the 'reception hall' and going to the bride's favorite breakfast restaurant in the whole world, Hobee's. After hearing about this place for years, I will say that I'll go back next time I'm in the area.
Post reception, we hopped on some buses and headed to Half Moon Bay to enjoy the beach and watch the sunset. The beach was beautiful, although the weather didn't cooperate and there was a beautiful sunset...behind the clouds.
Monday, we headed into San Francisco to meet up with more friends and to enjoy being a tourist. Thankfully, one of them lived in San Francisco, and took us to non-touristy places. Good fish, great ice cream (i wish i could remember the name), great view of the Golden Gate Bridge, great Ahi Tuna burger at Taylor's Automatic Refresher.
The nicest part of San Fran, is how progressive they are. Chain restaurants have a hard time moving in, so there are a ton of locally owned restaurants. Organics seem to be a lot more normal. They have curbside composting. We went to a high-end 'fast food' restaurant. They had 2 trash cans. 1 for compost, and the other for the only non-compostable item that they had...drink straws. It's just nice to be in a city that seems to get it.
The adventure in SF ended with some quality time with the Bride and Groom. We wish them a lifetime of laughter and adventure, rest and relaxation, and all the fun things that come imbetween.
Next stop: Portland!
