Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City

2008-05-15, Beijing, China

A visit to Beijing has to included Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The day started early with breakfast at the Peninsula Hotel and the bus leaving at 9:00am. We were dropped off a couple of blocks from Tiananmen Square and were instantly bombarded by vendors selling hats, watches and purses. We were told to ignore them and missed opportunities for some pretty good prices. Olympic hats were going to a dollar and one woman brought the price for 10 silk handbags from 100 yuan to 20 yuan (around $3.00). Those would have made great gifts for my daughter's friends! Like good tourans we obeyed the instructions and lost the opportunity to buy a Chairman Mao watch!
