Eat, sleep, breathe muay thai....

2008-05-14, Koh Samuie, Thailand

We finally made it to Koh Samui which is the island where we're training on. The camp is called WMC and as you'll all soon see from the pictures (I will post some soon I swear) it kinda looks like a shit hole. But the training is incredibly intense! The first two days we were here we only did one training session (both evening from 5-7pm) and today will be the first day we train twice a day. So for the next few weeks it's gonna be 4 hours of muay thai a day.

I was so excited for today's training session that I woke up EARLY...yes, that is earlier than the 7am that we already have to be up. My enthusiasm was hampered quickly after our 5km "warm up" run where I proceeded to die. Kristina, remember when we used to run and it was all fine and dandy? Yeah, well now I can't make it 2km without getting cramps so bad that it feels like someone is stabbing me repeatedly in the ribs. Luckily, one of the guys, Tony, was worse off than me, so I didn't feel like a complete failure!

Training with the thais is an interesting experience. A lot of them don't speak much english, and when you don't get something, they just kind of laugh at you. The best part was before we started class and a trainer started talking to another thai student, pointed at me, then they both started laughing. Ah yes...awesome. One can only imagine what they were saying! But just working in the vicinity of them pushes you to be harder, better, faster, stronger (anyone get the Daft Punk reference there?).

Training aside, Koh Samui is pretty sweet. The weather hasn't been that hot, and it's been mostly cloudy, which is good for training...terrible for the beach! We've all rented motor bikes to get around in, and it's definitely bringing back memories of scooting around Paros with Sandy a few years back. The food here is AMAZING and everything is so cheap. Hour long massages are only $7. Needless to say, I plan on getting one every single day here. Yesterday I had a traditional thai massage, where they pretty much use their own bodies to massage you, and contort you in interesting and new ways. It feels so good and it feels even better when you realize it costs as much as a meal does.

We've done a little touring around the island, mainly just to markets and other areas of town. Today we also drove up to this giant tower that's probably at least 300 feet tall and a few of us scaled it (there's a ladder on the inside part of the tower, although I don't think it was made for tourists to climb!). The view was incredible though and some of the guys have some really good video and pictures of it. I am slightly regretting climbing it now...my body is even more tired than before.

Well, I gotta run off (literally) and train, so this will be it for a few days. I think we're gonna hit up the Full Moon Party this weekend on Koh Phangan, so that should provide some stories!
