Last Week of Classes

2008-05-13, Cape Town, South Africa

My last week of classes at UWC. I can't believe how fast the time has gone!

I was there yesterday, and in the car driving home. We were waiting in traffic to leave, when I remembered something that had initially appeared odd, though now was in no way remarkable.

At the university, as every car leaves, they are forced to stop at a gate. Having done so, guards come out of a small security hut, demand that the driver open the trunk, and inspect it for stolen goods. This, despite the fact that computers are literally locked in metal cages in all of the technology labs!

It is a puzzling safety precaution due to the fact that a) it is not easy to sneakily steal a computer at any university and b) the computers already have a great deal of security surrounding them.

Other than that, there is not much to report. I spent today teaching the Environmental Care module before taking a taxi over to the office to work on paperwork and the next lesson's preparation. The rain and fog have been fairly incessant, so we've been renting a lot of movies--sad ones, partly to fit the mood of the gloomy weather, but primarily because my flatmates delight in the fact that I literally sob during tragedies.

Hope that all is well back home!
