We said a fond farewell to the Thai islands on 3rd May and embarked on a 6 hour bus, taxi and ferry journey down to Langkawi which is an island North West of Malaysia. First thing we spotted was a Starbucks!! Took a taxi to The Rainbow Lodge whch is a great place, basic but the staff are so friendly and can't do enough for you. Found an Irish bar which quickly became our local! We spent the first day lazing about on the beach. The following day we went on an island hopping trip, this took us to "Pregnant Maiden Lake" - the hills surrounding it are shaped like a pregnant lady. Bit of a trek to it but the scenery was lovely. We visited a small island with a beautiful white sandy beach, it poured from the heavens so we spent 45 minutes under a tin shelter! Also saw a load of eagles swooping down beside our boat catching fish, that was pretty cool. It continued to pour for the rest of the day so we visited an aquarium - saw some sharks unfortunately no great whites, think I'll have to wait till OZ for that one! We hired a motorbike the next day and took a ride to the 7 wells waterfall, had to climb 650 steps to get to it (legs nearly gave way at the top!) Great views up there despite it being overcast. We reached the bottom just in time as it began to rain very heavily complete with thunder and lghtening. We camped out in a souvenier shop for 1.5 hours in the hope the rain would subside - it didn't really so we braved it and got drenched.... if we hadn't we would probably still be in the souvenier shop! Luckily the weather had cleared by the following afternoon so we took off again on the bike, stopping briefly in Kuah for a bit of shopping and McDonalds - Tracey has been craving a Big Mac since we watched "Supersize Me" in Bangkok! Headed up to Langkawi Cable Cars after that, this was great! It took us up a huge mountain, 710 metres above sea level. Here we saw fantastic views of Langkawi and the Anadamon Sea - was pretty cold up there! Apparently the weather has been really bad due to the Cyclone Nargis, we seem to have received the tail end of it. Despite the poor weather we had a great time in Langkawi - heading down to Penang next which is another Malaysia n island, then to the Cameron Highlands (sounds more Scottish than Malaysian!) then down to Kuala Lumpar!
