'Rap, Raft and Rock!'

2008-04-20, Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

In Waitomo we did the done thing and went to visit the caves. We went through a small backpacker company 'Rap, Raft and Rock', as it was good value for money. Was slightly sceptical when we turned up at not much more than a shed and containers to get geared up, and since they were running low on batteries for our helmets (but was eventually sorted out)! I think our guide thought i was smaller than i was as it took me a while with MUCH difficulty to get into my suit (and then out of it, aquired assistance from laura). But when we were down there it was really cool. We abseiled down into an open cave, then waded through the water to view the glow-worms in some caves. We then went caving, squeazing through really tight holes in the rocks. Then we went black water reafting down the river, connected ourselves together on tubes and floated in the darkness looking at the glow-worms, was really amazing. We then wandered around some more caves, had some hot juice and chocolate picnic in the cave then climbed our way back out of the open cave. Would recommend it for backpackers, as it had alot of variation that you cant get for the same price at other places...

we then went to the "pub" for dinner, luckily we had enough money on us though as the nearest atm we found out was 16km away!!! A very small place Waitomo is!
