So we eventually arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal on 16 January after a nightmare journey! Took the (1 hour late) overnight train from Delhi to Gorakphur. We had booked First Class.... it was like something from Prisoner Cell Block H! We had a small steel room with a set of bunkbeds, it was bogging! Oh and we had a few cockroach guests! There was no bedding supplied so we piled on the layers (and I was mocked for packing my thermal trousers!) and we tried to get some sleep. OMG I have never been so cold in my life! Within about 1 hour I had lost all feeling in my hands and feet, don't think we managed to sleep at all.
So we arrived in Gorakphur at 10am (11 hours after we departed) from Delhi, booked the bus to the Nepalese border and were escorted to the bus - was a local mini bus for about 15 people, there must have been about 30 people crammed on it! An old gross woman sat opposite tracey (she actually spat a bit of food onto Tracey!), and I had an old man just about sitting in my knee - he stank!! 2.5 hours later we arrived at the Nepalese border and eventually got a "jeep" (was actually a mini bus, not overcrowded this time) to Kathmandu. Arrived at our guest house at 11pm, dumped our bags in a room which had 2 proper beds and carpet, and headed to the bar for a much needed beer!
We have to go back to Delhi for a day to get to Goa, needless to say we are flying this time!
Nepal is great, soooo much nicer than India! For a start you don't have to dodge cow crap on the streets! Everyone is much friendlier, it is cleaner and there is much less hassle.
I did a bungee jump the other day (160m) - was amazing!! Best thing I have ever done! Had to jump off a suspension bridge into a gorge - view was spectaculour!! Surrounded by hills and mountains.
We have booked an Everest flight and a 3 day trip to a National park. The scenery in Kathmandu is beautiful, totally surrounded by hills, and behind them are snow covered mountains. We have spent some time on rooftop cafes just taking in the views.
Heading back to Delhi on 26th for 1 night then off to Goa on 27th for 2-3 weeks of sunshine!!
