Bohol is an extremely beautiful island and the tourist population is growing, but it's still a very quiet place and all the tourists seem to be carted around in air conditiuoned coaches from Alona beach to the Chocolate hills stopping off at the caged Tarsier monkeys on the way. It's mainly a diving destination, that and a place for middled aged men to run after young Filipino women - aaarrgghh! The waters are beautifully clean and there is a diversity to the island. You can dive, go rafting, canoeing, visit the chocolate hills, jungle trekking, swimming, sunbathing... it's all here - well, except nightlife.

Talking to locals Bohol is much livelier then it used to be, but for a city lad like myself it's one of the most quiet places I've been. At night most places shut at 9pm, it seems Bohol wakes and sleeps with the sun. We went to the cinema yesterday at 12:30 pm and it was packed, we went to the late showing a couple of days before at 8:30pm and it was empty... (yep we like movies). I do also like to be in the absolute middle of nowhere looking all around and seeing nothing but nature. Unfortunately that's hard to do here because the majority of beaches have been bought by hotels or access is cut off for one reason or another. I would say if you're looking for fantastic beaches you'll have to check into the Bohol beach club or one of the other expensive resorts, but you'd be better off going to Palawan for that sort awe inspiring natural beauty. Here it's mainly about the diving - dive, dive, dive...and what a diving destination it is...

We're heading off to Siargao in a couple of days - the surfing capital of the Philippines. The pictures look absolutely stunning, I'll post some when I'm there...
