The Battle between the Campuses

2008-04-18, Samara, Costa Rica

This week we started to receive transfer students from our sister campus in Heredia. It did not take long for the new students to start in on how much superior the Heredia campus was in comparison to Samara. After speaking to a few students…..I began to get a little worried….as they all had the same opinion. “Heredia was where the serious students go” “You learn so much quicker over in Heredia” and on and on…… Did I choose the wrong campus? Did I just waste a month here in Samara when I should have been in Heredia this whole time?? I spent a good bit of time looking at all the schools…..and believe it or not for once I am actually at school to learn. I started to dig around to see if I could find out the reasons why Heredia was so much better than Samara......it ends up that there was a logical explanation behind the rumors. Essentially it is because there is not shit to do in Heredia other than to leave the city….or study. Not sure about you…..but after 2 or 3 visits to the open air market…..I would begin to get pretty bored. I started asking everyone about their daily schedules and they were all identical. Get up, eat, go to school, come back home, study, eat dinner, go to sleep. I asked the girls what they did in the evening…….and everyone just stayed home. In fact, there responses were more like “Are you crazy….go out at night in Heredia??? No way in hell would I leave the house after the sun goes down.” They even said that most of the local families don’t even go out in the evenings. I can imagine what the conversations at school are like….

Cindy – “Did you hear about Jim and Carla last night?”
Jane – “No, I have not heard anything….I just got to school.”
Cindy – “Well, last night when I was memorizing reflexive verb conjugation patterns, I heard that they were mugged and raped….and someone took their books.”
Jane – “Oh my god, that is horrible…..Someone stole their books? How are they going to study?”
Cindy – “I said the same thing…..what kind of savage would steal a person’s books? But they said as soon as Jim’s ass heals….The school is going to give them new books.”

I will take my language studies with a beach and a beer anyday………

Pura Vida…..
