A week in Dubai...

I haven't had a chance to update the journal in the past week...so I have decided the plan is to update it on a weekly basis...otherwise I would drive myself nuts (and probably everyone else!).

Dubai started off being cold...well, cold compared to my expectations. Dubai has been warmer than Tasmania though. The past two days have warmed up to around 34 degrees. In Dubai the weekend is on Friday and Saturday. Hardly anything is open on a Friday. It recently changed from being on a Thursday and Friday.

Traffic here is insane! We have worked out what times to avoid going anywhere. People honk their horn for no reason; drive insanely fast while talking on their phones, all of which is illegal. And no indicating! Maybe it’s a ‘blink and you miss it’ indicator!! I know you will always get idiots on the road, but I swear they have more per capita here. It explains the high number of road accidents and fatalities. My driving is very tame and safe compared to the driving here.

We have been to a few shopping centres to check them out. There is one down the road from us which sells many overpriced items, although it does have a Jeans West! We went to the Emirates Mall, which has the indoor ski centre in it. It was really cool to look though the windows inside the mall and see people skiing and playing in the snow. It was pretty surreal actually. The best one so far has been Deira City Centre Mall. It is sort of the equivalent of Eastlands – but without the Bogans! It has a shop like Priceline called Boots with beauty products at realistic prices. It also has a Woolworths, but it’s nothing like the Australian Woolworths, it’s more like Target. There is a big supermarket here called Carrefour and it is like a Kmart, Coles, Fresco and Banjo’s all rolled into one.

I plan to go to the Aussie Bar on Sunday. I am going to watch some football. I can’t wait! Watching AFL is one of the biggest things that I miss. So to know that there is an Australian bar here in Dubai that shows broadcasts of AFL is bloody awesome. On Sunday I will be shouting ‘GO THE PIES!!’

Hope everyone is great. I have enjoyed reading your messages and emails. I am sorry I haven’t replied to everyone. I will try to send some personalised emails when I get the chance.

Anita xx
