The speedboat at 1600 out of the Perentian Islands was just as hairy as on the way there, but it is the ONLY way to get to get there and back. Once on the mainland we took the night bus from Jertih, which left at 8pm, costing RM37 each (6 pounds) . I slept most of the way, which by all accounts was a good thing as I am not the best passenger in the world! Supposedly overtaking on the outside of blind bends, or on the brow of a hill is quite normal out here.
We arrived at 4.30am and waited the 90 minutes for a local bus (RM1.50) 25pence rather than pay the RM30 into Georgetown by taxi, my we are getting stingy. But we talked to the locals and had a takeaway coffee out of a plastic bag with a straw whilst waiting.
Our hotel in Georgetown is called Hong Ping and costs RM69 (11 pounds) a night. It is comfortable and will do until we fly out on 9th April to Bangkok.
Penang Island is not what we expected at all, in fact we have come to the conclusion that we have been spoilt with our choice of the beautiful places we have visited so far.
Today we have come to Batu Ferringhi and it is reminiscent of Mallorca on a bad day, with jet skis, horse rides and banana boat rides along the beach.
