27th to 30th Dec 2007 :
We flew from Kuala Lumpur to Miri by Malaysian Airlines and from Miri, took a fokker plane to Mulu. Quite an amazing experience being in such a small plane but there’s nothing to fear, really !
The airport in Mulu is just a small one – like in a little cowboy town. We were greeted by Royal Mulu Resort’s transport, where we stayed for 3 nights. Booked our stay through a travel agent (Ping Anchorage) but you can also book directly by visiting the Resort's website or by calling them directly. The most common itinerary for a visit to this part is a visit to the 4 famous caves, watching the groups of bats spiralling out from one of the caves and enjoying the wonders of the National Park. The more adventurous might want to go further to attempt climbing the Pinnacles. We wanted to do so but the travel agent informed us that it was not possible at this time of the year due to the rainy season. We were very disappointed when we found out while we were at the Resort that the climb was in fact possible and there were freelance-qualified guides who are more than willing to take us there!!
We wanted somewhere comfortable to stay after our adventures in the nature and the Royal Mulu Resort was the perfect choice. We walked a lot, trekked a little, rode on long boats...so, it is nice to finally come back to a nice, huge room with all the modern amenities to boost. Our package includes all meals at the Resort's Wildflower Restaurant and for us, the food is beyond our expectations..very delicious and they changed the menu everyday to create a variety, which is rarely done in other hotels!
Be warned that if you visit this part of Borneo, there are actually no other places for you eat in the evenings except in the Resort itself. We did not see any stalls or shops in the village during our rides out from the Resort to the National Park.
A 4 day / 3 night stay is sufficient for those who just want an easy few days away from the city to have a "rainforest" experience. For the more adventurous ones, you would have to stay a little longer as you would have to spend some nights at some camp-bases away from the Resort in order to make your way to the Pinnacles and other trails.
All in all, our stay has been really good but we will be coming back again to make it to the Pinnacles and more boat rides to perhaps visit some of the local tribes! We missed that this time round.
