This was about my all time favorite stop during our honeymoon. The city has been rebuilt after being destroyed by a hurricane a few years ago. From what I heard it needed to be revamped, its a shame a hurricane had to do it but boy is it lovely! The ship used to be able to dock there but now has to offer ferry service since the hurricane yanked the monster dock away too. That may never be re-build, who knows???
Once we got off the ferry we were greeted by rottweilers, dobermans and large machine gun toting gaurds. This all told me everyone better behaive while in Cozumel. Like our guide said you will not commit a crime and get off this island and I believe him! After walking through a breezeway we popped out into a vastly colorful array of buildings and characters. Costumed islanders had us stand beside them for photos then off we trotted. There were small souvenier carts everywhere and I had a hard time not being distracted while we waited to get on our bus to Passion Island.
Now don't get me wrong, Passion Island was pleasant. They had a nice Mayan buffet lunch for us and we could snorkle until our bodies pruned but there wasn't much to see snorkle wise. We found a starfish and bugged the mush out of it for a little while and found a few very large conch shells but no reefs and no real fish to speak of. So we enjoyed hanging out in hammocks in the shade and shopping along in some of the tarp tents they had up. The hurricane had destroyed all the grass huts so they did the best they could. We did purchase a lovely mask made of semi precious stones and I just loved it! After that we headed back to Cozumels main shopping district for what I felt was a shopping experience of a life time!
To shop in Cozumel is heaven, even for my husband who doesn't really like to shop. There is so much in the way of unique items and the silver....mercy! We went into shops with so much silver jewelry you literally couldn't look at it all. You can really bargain with the shop keeps. Now keep in mind you can get better deals from the men than the women so keep that in mind. Also be mindful that some shops offer free shots of tequila. This is meant to loosen your mind so you'll loosen your wallet. So be careful before you take a few or later you'll be wondering where you bought that live iguana from. Besides...the ship won't let you bring it onboard.
Enyoy the photos!
