As I've hinted at before, I have joined a dance class at Mito Community College. My friend, Yuko, teaches the class and I was really excited to finally be able to sign up for it. Class started two weeks ago. It's on Tuesday nights from 8-9. I have to take the train in and back home, so it really is from 7-10, but it gets me out of the house which is great!!
It's been a while since I've taken any sort of dance class, and I was a little nervous for my first class. I mean...let's see... it's been years since I've danced......I'm the only 'whitey' in the class......I outweigh the other women by a good 40 lbs......I'm in a room full of mirrors......... If that's not intimidating, I don't know what is!!
But......I love it!
I may feel like a big, jiggly cow in the class, but I've got two things going for me that the other women don't: 1) I have rhythm and, 2) I have something to SHAKE!!
I definitely have to deal with some self-image issues, but that's what is great about the class. I'm dealing with them. I have so much fun and while I may not be the most graceful person, that's not the point. I'm dancing and doing something physical. Plus, it helps me to feel like I'm living a "normal" life by taking a class. It has nothing to do with teaching or sightseeing- it's just a dance class after work.
I'm learning more Japanese as well. Yuko is good at making sure I understand her instructions, but it is all in japanese. The other ladies are really fun, too. When they found out I was an English teacher, they all said "now, you are our teacher!".
I even got to use some of my new moves over this past weekend when I was in Tokyo!!
I will try to get some pictures up of my class and my sexy, bright yellow hip scarf too!!
