LIVING IT UP AT THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA -- Boondocking in Todos Santos
eagle's song, Hotel California for appetizers and drinks which we afforded by eating/sleeping in our camper on the street outside the hotel. We also used used their wi fi signal to upload stories and pictures. Cousin Debbie had recommended it but said it was not THE Hotel California of the popular song... Part of the California group had come here for lunch and enjoyed it. It was quite cool and tastefully decorated!
Laura learned something new about the different cuts of meat in Mexico. Steak arrachera is a cut that according to one waiter we talked to is a cut that is near the stomach. It was kind of a soft texture and not quite what I wanted so take that for what it is worth! We also went to the wine bar in town that is on my recommended list if for nothing else but the landscaping and design.
On our second evening in the Hotel California Bar we met some interesting characters. There was a couple, she spends her winters down there and he comes to visit. He was quite shocked to find out that the lagoon he had spent the day beside sometimes breaks through to the ocean and is considered dangerous. Bill had told us this and so we were forwarned. There is also a sign by the lagoon now because someone evidently drowns there almost every year. The manager of Hotel California said it is because there is a strong undertow right there and this is what causes the problems.
We also met Darryl at the Hotel California Bar the last night. He is originally from New Mexico and was a hot air balloon pilot. He had some interesting stories to tell about both Todos Santos and his ballooning days. He is truly a local in my mind, the only day he knows for sure is Thursday which is steak night at one of the local places. It sounded good, cook your own steak, potatoes and a salad. Of course to do this we would have to stay for another week! After spending the evening trading stories we decided to meet for breakfast the next morning. He gave us directions to his house and we (Robert) found it. We visited with his parrots and cocatiel(sp) and then went out to eat. We ate at a place that must have just recently opened. My huevos rancheros were good but Darryl and Robert only gave hohum reports.
We went back to his place and then he drove us the fisherman´s beach. The road to fisherman´s beach: to continue past the RV park and the road goes out to where all the fisherman take off in the morning. According to Darryl this is something to see. One boat manages to get out past the surf and then helps pull the rest out to sea. In the evening when they come in, they time the waves and when hit a calm time, race in and then a truck helps pull them the rest of the way up onto shore. Sounds interesting but we were too late or early to see this happen. Fisherman beach is also what is known as Punte Lobos. According to Darryl there are usually seals there but there were not any the day we went.
We said our goodbyes to the very interesting and hospitable Darryl, leave the dusty town behind, and move on down the coast toward Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
