The Huacas del Sol y la Luna are pyramids from the Moche culture in northern Peru just outside the city of Trujillo. Had a look at them today and it was amazing. Grabbed a cab in Trujillo to Huaca la Luna, twelve soles and at this site is where you pay- eleven soles for entrance. You have to go with a guide and Spanish and English guides are available. The tour of the pyramid was cool since I was taken thru the levels and told about the history and significance of the friezes. La Luna was built over centuries and each level was covered by the next generation of builders, the bricks were marked with individual stamps of the maker and during the building process huge friezes were covered up and are now visible due to excavation. There are alot of reprensentations of human sacrifice, including decapitation. Pretty intense. La Luna is still being excavated as well as the town at its base which has been covered by sand and estimates are that over 10,000 people lived here, what I was told anyway.
The Conquistadores damaged the pyramid looking for loot and then grave robbers did more damage but alot is still being uncovered. Across from Huaca la Luna is the Huge pyramid of Huaca del Sol but this place is off limits and you can no longer climb it. Huaca del Sol has not been excavated yet due to lack of funding and the general idea is that there may not be much in it but how the hell would people know that.
Really cool here but hot as hell since your in the desert. Once I was done I got on the mini bus back to Trujillo which leaves the Huaca la Luna every thirty minutes and takes about the same amount of time to get back into Trujillo and costs 1.50 soles. Was dropped off somewhere I had no idea of as far as location since street signs are damn near nill here outside the plaza but I lokked for the huge radio tower covered in netting and just headed straight towards this which got me more in the center of the city and from there I knew where I was. Nice day.
