|  | | Bull | | | | | Saturday morning is usually a quiet on the beach road. So when we saw numerous motorcycles on the road we figured something was up. And the motorcycles kept coming with two or three men on each one. We inquired at our breakfast place and found out that the bullfight had come to town. A bullfight here is one where two very large bulls butt heads until one quits. It can last anywhere from about two minutes to a half hour. The venue is a large field and the arena is the area that is ringed by the bravest or craziest of the spectators. This was an important fight as two champions were competing. We figured that about a thousand people or more were in attendance. We could not see the bulls but could tell where the bulls moved to because of the movement of the people immediately around the two bulls. The more agile (not us) climbed coconut trees to watch. We were told to be careful because sometimes a bull bolts and spectators get injured or killed. We were also told to watch out for the police because it is an illegal sport. But as we saw the police driving away from where the bullfight was to take place, fighting what appeared to be upstream as the motorcycles kept coming, we knew that the payoff was made and the fight would take place. Well we didn't see the bulls fighting but it was quite exciting to watch the crowd move to and fro as the fight continued for about twenty minutes. Our bull (Benaulim) won and we were told that a lot of money changed hands. We saw the winner in his stall later with a red ribbon tied around his belly.
Otherwise we have settled into our usual routine. Beach during the day, read and chat with friends. Dinner at night overlooking the Arabian Sea watching the twinkling lights of the fishing boats.
