2008-02-18, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

I had two first time experiences today;
1) diving in freshwater
2) cavern diving
Cenotes (Se.no.tes) are Mexico`s freshwater bodies. It is basically an underground river system that has formed when limestone has been eroded away. Although they have seen extended periods without water flowing through.

It was fantastic. Although very fes animals inhabit these systems (I only saw two fish species). The formations of caves, crevases, stalagmites and stalagtites make for amazing veiwing. Especially when there is sunlight sporadically seeping through breaks in the cavern ceiling. It is a very surreal expereince. The water is crystal clear with visablilty to 100m. We also surfaced in a cavern were bats inhabited the ceiling.

The highlight was seeing ancient carvings that were made during a time when the caves had no water flowing through.
