EXtreme Serendipity La Paz, Baja Sur

Note: Robert's mother Minnie has several great books about serendipity, and she has shared snippets with us from time to time and we have always appreciated them. Recently we had another serendipitous experience...

We took off from the ferry landing and headed the few miles into La Paz. Of course we had to stop along the way and take pictures and enjoy the scenery. We had the GPS giving us what we should be doing as we went along the coastline. It is a winding road with the water on one side so of course is exciting as both the driver and passenger are wanting to watch the scenery.

La Paz is for Lovers

La Paz as you arrive is very pretty, seawall on one side and shops and sidewalks on the other. I was feeling disoriented and so we turned off the main road and Robert suggested we stop and have a cup of coffee and get our land legs. We parked and walked to one of the sidewalk coffee shops. The one we chose Cafe Exquisitio had free internet, 15 minute limit. Ordered coffee and checked our email.

Earthquake News from Reggie

Found out from Reggie there had been an earthquake in Baja the night we sailed. Checked and found out it was in northern Baja. Whew!

Little Friends of the Forest Email, Barbara and Dan

We then found an e-mail from Dan and Barbara of Encinitas, CA. We met Dan and Barbara in a remote village in Bali in 1990, and now count them as some of our closest friends. We have had a number of fun experiences traveling with them since!

Their email was shocking. They were flying into La Paz at noon the very day we were checking our email! We had checked our calendar and knew they were going to be in Baja but thought they were going to be about 500 miles north of us. They told us the name of the hotel where they would be staying. We knew they were already enroute and couldnīt be contacted. We went back to the camper and rested for a good part of the afternoon because we were fairly brain dead from the boat ride, wait, etc.

After the nap we decided to try to locate the place they were supposed to be staying and see if we could find them. The guide book map didnīt put in all the streets so it took us a little while to find the hotel, they had checked in but were out eating.

We left them a note and then tried to find them on our own. There were two restaurants near the hotel, looked in the first one, nope, then on to the second, and there they were. We stood in the door until Dan spotted us, came over and invited us to joined the group already into a pitcher of margaritas.

They were all amazed as we were by the EXtreme Serendipity at finding Dan and Barbara. The group invited us to join them in the margaritas and so we got to meet the bulk of the group that was going on the whale watching trip to Magdalena Bay.

Terah and Brian!

We were delighted to see Terah and Bryan, people we had met on a trip out to Dan and Barbaraīs at Christmas couple of years back. A very diverse, fun group! Several pitchers of margaritas and good meal, we said our goodbyes and agreed to meet Dan and Barbara in the morning.

Bill and Meo

We learned from Dan and Barbara that two of their friends that we had also met in Bali would be coming on the trip! We had not seen them since 1990!
