Protests in Cuzco

2008-01-22, Cuzco, Peru

The last few days in Cuzco there have been small protests but today there was a huge one and we got right in the middle of it taking hundreds of images. Had to be thousands of people marching, chanting, throwing stuff, and burning tires. The riot police surrounded the Plaza de Armas in anticipation of craziness and all the stores and restaurants boarded up. Last time this happened, we heard the people smashed up the shops pretty good.

Mobs and mobs of people marching thru the Plaza. From what we understood the protests were about the privatization of Machu Picchu and that apparently Chile was somehow involved and the locals DID NOT want MP to be taken over by the interest of another country. Can´t blame them and I´d be doing the same thing.

Hopefully I´ll be able to get the images up for all to see because this was really intense.
