Dried llama foetus and other delicacies

2008-01-31, La Paz, Bolivia

We left Copacabana on Thursday morning, to head to La Paz. This involved an interesting river crossing, where we had to get off the bus and get a little launch boat across while the bus crossed the river on a sort of big raft.

In La Paz, we found our current hostel, dead cheap at $5 a night but also 2 doors down from a nightclub, so noisy until the late early hours. It{s a building with great but untapped potential. A former mansion house, amazing staircases and murals and internal courtyards but sadly run down (and a bit grubby). It seems to be run by just one man, who is here all the time and entertains himself by practising his karate kicks, jumps and spins when he thinks no-one can see him (caught him at it yesterday - he{d do better to be doing a bit of cleaning!)

La Pazīs Witchesī Market is just across the road but not as appealing or extensive as I had thought. If I never see, or smell (itīs beginning to make me gag just walking past), another dried llama foetus as long as I live, it won{t be too soon. Every stall has them, and they are nasty! I{m going to try to get a picture sneakily but I think the stallholdrs curse you if you photograph but donīt buy!

Next entry: Wet t-shirts and fake snow
