It`s hot here. Its the desert. Seeing the Nazca lines was incredible. It`s very easy to get a flight since its a daily thing and the flight lasts about an hour. Best to go in the morning. Got in a single engine cessna and off we went. It can be hard to photograph and I got ill a few times but just remember: breath, look at horiozon, shoot, breath, look at horizon, shoot and so on. The plane flies in tight circles and rocks back and forth so getting sick is easy and its hot but so worth it. There are over 350 geoglyphs discovered so far on the desert floor and on a typical flight you`ll get to see about twenty or so.
Next its worth a visit to the Chauchilla Cemetery. You can go by taxi or tour just donīt get caught up with guides since they will rush you thru the area. The cemetery is a bunch of tombs that grave robbers discovered then eventually came under some kind of protection. The site is about 1000yrs old and there are numerous pits with mummies(skeletons) wrapped in their burial garb with hair, clothing......you name it. The grounds are littered with bones, pot shards, cotton clothing, etc.
Its about 30km from Nazca and admission was five soles. A tiny museum is on site with artefacts and a female mummy with baby though separated.
Flights for the lines were $40US and thats typical but increase in high season. A decent enough hotel in Nazca is the Hotel Alegria and charges $30US for a doble with private bath/hot water, so if your not on a bare bones budget. The hotel can arrange many tours and is right across the street from the bus station. The Plaza de Armas in Nazca is quite small but good for a stroll. Check out Rico Pollo for some good, cheap chicken skewers which is right before Plaza Bolgnesi.
