Day Hikes around Urique
One day we went with Bill and Holly did a hike up the Mescalero Canyon road a ways. It is mostly uphill on the way there; it does go down for awhile getting quite close to the river. As we left town, we passed the hanging bridge to the other side and there actually is a place where the people drive across the river to get to the town on the other side. Because of all the rain, it appeared to me to be tooooo deep. Flowers and trees were blooming along the walk, vistas beautiful and the temperature just perfect and no rain for a change. We hiked to where a gate stopped us and then turned around and found a spot on the river to have snack and watch Hattie playing in the water (the dog). Refreshed we headed back;I had left my binoculars behind but fortunately this was discovered early on the walk back.
Tyronne the Aussie had taken a day hike up on a ridge from the opposite side of the river and said it had grate view, but he was observing a bee hive in a hole in the ground that was next to the trail and was stung....
Bill and Molly drove to another town downriver and hiked up a canyon that narrowed and had boulders to be climbed over but was beautiful.
We had been told by a local that the town across and up the river was pretty. Bill said that he had ridden his moutain bike over the bridge last year but had not made it to the town because he tired of riding the hills.. Though one can usually ford the river and drive to the town, the river was too high and the swinging bridge was the option.. Even when the river was low Bill had observed people stuck in the sand...
We road our bikes into town but the road beside the river was quite rough and rocky...
