THE LOW ROAD TO BAHUICHIVO AND CEROCAHUI ON THE WAY TO URIQUE:
The next morning we set off before 7:00 since we already knew our way through San Rafael. When Robert was doing internet research, he found a site that had information on the trip down the low road with mileage points to make sure you were on the right track. (This is part of the reason we felt certain we were on the high road---none of these places appeared.)
I am including them because they were some interesting places. 1.6 - continue past left turn to LaLaya and Hostal Guitayo 4.1 - railroad crossing 4.5 - lst bridge over Arroyo Cuiteco 5.4 - Manzano bridge 5.8 - enter scenic canyon 6.1 - Cueva de los Dragones (cave of the dragons) 7.2 - Cueva de Veneno (venemous cave) 7.8 - small bridge over side stream. trail to waterfall- good place for lunch 8.3 - dramatic view of railroad trestle 8.9 - canyon opens 10.0- ruinsof Orivo camp; much destroyed when built baseball field 10.8- school, church and junction road to Chure; very rough may not be passable 11.0- lookout view of Cuiteco railroad trestle. stop and rest 11.3- Cuiteco Hotel built by American Albert Kinsey Owen, found of the colony at Topolobambo and was visionary of the railroad 12.5- pass under train tracks, can take photo of train coming out of tunnel over bridge but requires scrambling up far side of bridge 12.7- keep left at minor junction where road splits for km or two 13.2- last 3 stream fords, all the rest have been bridged 16.2- bridge made of train rails 16.2- junction-turn left at Bahuichive train station
There were a couple of things this helpful guide could not predict; one of the bridges has partially collapsed and being repaired so we crossed the stream--we knew it could be done because several vehicles had gone before us. Just were shocked at how deep it really was, over the bumper of our tall truck it seemed! Yea Off Road 4x4 Package Ford F 250 !
The last turn to the train station--the road goes straight toward Cuiteco I believe and the road to the train station turns left and down and then up again toward to the train station. You do cross the tracks as you head toward Cerocahui.
