San Marcos is a wonderful place. We took the quick lancha ride from Casa Del Mundo and entered the jungle canopy that surrounds most of the town. There are a lot of gringos living there, mostly non-Americans, who loved it enough to decide to stay and earn their keep by offering incredible Swedish and Shiatsu massages, reiki classes, reflexology sessions, etc. You can also take classes to learn these skills yourself, and the cost is low but the quality is not! John got an hour and a half massage that left him blissed out for hours, and we could still afford to go to the restaurant that was showing the movie Adaptation during the meal. We stayed at this funky, artsy hostel called Aaculaxx where in addition to buying fresh bread daily you could also take a class in stained glass making. There are these great rocks on the water where you can watch the clouds shifting across the volcanoes and swim in that wonderful lake water. The vegetarian food options are astonishing. There is also a place called Las Piramides, where you can take a four-week course in getting to know yourself through various methods and it follows the lunar calendar. We just missed the full moon, unfortunately, but we did get to enjoy the best cup of coffee we've had since coming to Guatemala in their yummy restaurant. For a massage, I would reccommend San Marcos Holistic Center, but there are lots of other options as well. And, bring a flashlight! The little trails and streets that make up the grid of the town are not lit. When we have more time, I hope to return here again.
