Day 2 – Arenal Lake & Eco Termales Hot Springs

2007-12-23, La Fortuna, Costa Rica

So I was told that December in Costa Rica is summertime, apparently that isn’t so where we are at in the Arenal area. We only brought a couple of pairs of pants and LOTS of shorts. It’s raining, it rains here a LOT! And of course I neglected to bring our ponchos or our umbrellas, brilliant.

Breakfast at our hotel is actually quite terrible. You have your options of either, juevos rancheros (which is not good), pancakes (Krusteaz mix, I saw the bag), a typical breakfast (eggs/rice/beans/corn tortillas), omelet (not good either) or a tostada. That’s the only disappointment of staying at a smaller place, the food selection gets limiting when you are there for too long.

Our activity today was a volcano hike, hot springs and dinner. It was drizzling so when our van went to pick up others we went to buy some ponchos. Dallas and I have always been so spoiled and have gotten private tours everywhere so going with a group this trip was just strange. We hiked up to a beautiful view of Lake Arenal on some old volcanic rocks. The hike was a very easy one, there was a path so it is frequently used by many, especially many tour groups. Lots of children too, but the view was incredible. We saw toucans and a sloth on the way, lots of flora as well. We came to find out the weather system was the same one that brought rain to California right before we left, ugh! Apparently Arenal only has 2 months of summertime so we were a bit lame in thinking that it would be pleasant weather for us.

We went to Eco Termales hot springs, which was wonderful. It is private and limits to only 100 people at a time, so reservations are mandatory. Unfortunately we were only there for an hour. They had 5 pools and a waterfall. The hottest pool had cold “rain” coming down so you don’t overheat. Sadly Dallas left his favorite swim trunks there. I wish we had the chance to go there again.

We had a group dinner at a restaurant at the Volcano Lodge not far from our hotel. We’ve been eating a lot of tilapia. I told Dallas to make sure we each get different things in case one has mussels, and of course the sea bass in seafood sauce did so I’m glad we could trade (again!). There were a lot of people getting beautiful lobsters served to them. We were so thrilled to find this place because we didn’t want to get bored of eating at our hotel. We decided to come here tomorrow (unfortunately we had our worst travel experience ever, read on)!
