There are many places to be on the night of December 31 for New Year celebration. Possibilities are endless, but it never occurred to me to celebrate a new year on the plane. For a traveler like me it was a good idea to receive 2008 traveling, who knows maybe I get lucky and get to travel the whole year. I took a flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo, departed on December 31 at 1155am and scheduled to land at 440pm on January 1. But when and where exactly starts 2008? With Los Angeles time the landing would be at 1140pm of December 31, with Tokyo time departure is at 445am of January 1. The answer is the International Date Line. When crossing this line the date changes, in my case my 747 crossed the line at 715pm of December 31 of Los Angeles time and then became 1215pm of January 1 of Tokyo time. After crossing this line an announcement was made and everybody on the plane received champagne courtesy of Japan Airlines. I made a toast to celebrate New Year 2008 with the satisfaction that I start the year traveling….
