Just a short trip to Phuket. Spent 3 days in kata area which is much quieter than Patong. Went on a Raya island and Coral island snorkeling trip on day 2. The water was good and clear around raya island especially. Some parts of Raya island had very good sandy beaches, good coral and fish. Also happened to see 4 dolphins while we were having lunch on Raya island. Coral island on the other hand seem to be very quiet and deserted. Many places seemed run down and out of use or maybe there was another part of the island. On the 3rd day moved over to Patong. Full of massage shops, shops selling the same kind of touristy products at riduculous prices which you are expected to bargain down, hold in the wall tour agencies, tuk tuk and taxi drivers asking you if you need a ride. Not much has changed since the last time I was there in 2001,the only difference is the giant Jungcelyon shopping mall . It is big and has everything that is expected in shopping mall. Walking in there is a great relief from the outside shops and almost makes you feel as if you are in Bangkok.
