YOU never make the most of the sights in your own back garden until you have visitors to show around - an old adage that was definitely the case when Gemma's mum and dad came to Townsville.
Their visit saw us going places and doing things which were so close but we just had not done yet, which meant we all had a great time.
The first part of their stay we had not scheduled too much for, and so we enjoyed visiting a few places nearby, including the Strand - Townsville's beach promenade, complete with salt-water lagoon called the Rockpool.
Then we went a little further afield to the Billabong Sanctuary, which is a wildlife park built around a massive lake (the billabong). Gemma's mum Gill thoroughly enjoyed this and had her picture taken with every creature she could get her hands on, from a carpet python and blue-tongue lizard to a koala and even a wombat.
We also had a great picnic on tables near the edge of the billabong.
Another day we headed up into the rainforest and went to Paluma for some walking and cooler air, stopping at Crystal Creek on the way down so Adrian and I could swim in the cold but fresh mountain stream.
Back in the city, we introduced them to Australian coffee - which is surprisingly good- and the city's dining locations such as Palmer Street.
Ironically, Gill and Adrian ended up introducing us to their favourite restaurant, Benny's Hot Wok, which they discovered one evening and ended up going back to about three times!
Their last visit was with us, as Gemma and I had never been before, and we went with a couple of our friends Katherine and Matt who had just come back from Europe.
Adrian recommended the red curry as he had eaten it about three times before.
It was a good start to their visit with us.
