GETTING round to visit as many people as we could was a main aim of our trip back to the UK, so we were lucky that everyone went out of their way to make our visit as easy and comfortable as possible.
Visiting my dad and his new wife Sue in Yatton outside Bristol was definitely a pleasure and not a chore as we got to enjoy lovely food and fancy coffee and had the chance to chat for hours about our respective travels.
We also took walks through small villages and along an old disused railway line (called the Strawberry Line), Gemma went for a night out with her friend Ruth and I got to see a football match.
With AFC Bournemouth (my team) playing away during the only weekend we would have been near enough to see them, I thought I would have to wait another season or two to be visiting any football grounds in England.
But after dad and I had dropped Gemma off at Ruth's, we passed Ashton Gate (the ground of Bristol City) to see people streaming in. We made a rash decision, parked and went to buy tickets - it turned out they were playing Yeovil Town. So we sat in the sun and drank tea in plastic cups and watched a thrilling 2-2 draw between two teams whose fans obviously hate each other - brilliant.
It wasn't watching the Cherries, but otherwise it couldn't have been much better.
Gemma had a fab time visiting Ruth too -- so good that when we went to pick her up the next day, she could hardly remember a thing.
The final few days we spent with my family in Poole, before it was time to catch a taxi back to the airport and back on the long journey to Australia.
We had a busy few days, but were able to celebrate mum's birthday with a meal at her favourite restaurant, Oriel, on Poole Quay, and finished with a great barbeque on the patio -- the first time for years.
