#3 Ready-Set-Go?
We enjoyed a visit to a “summer camp” on Thurs. This is a program that teaches English to “jovenes talentos” (gifted kids) and is funded by the American Embassy. The HS aged students spend 3 weeks of their vacation living at one of the schools in the city.
We made 6:00am runs to the airport on Fri. and Sat. mornings, and all of our volunteers have now arrived. At our orientation this afternoon we outlined the goals and activities of the Project. Our instructors, liaisons and former volunteers shared their experiences with the new-bies. We’ve got very good people again to work with.
Tonight we were invited to the wedding reception of a relative of some friends we’ve made here. We were treated royally by the parents of the bride, enjoying food and music, and trying to converse in Spanish. As part of this Salvadoran family, my name is now Daphne Hofschulte-Diaz.
The news about the missing suitcase isn’t good. We’ll call again tomorrow but that’s the 10th day and then we’re taken out of the local system. As of Monday the main American Airlines office in Dallas takes over and if the bag is discovered it will be returned to Fairbanks. I guess the good side is that if it is found, at least we’ll have stuff for next year.
Tomorrow my group is supposed to transfer to San Miguel; however, we haven’t got confirmation on either transportation or housing yet. I realize that things are more last minute here, but I’ll be very relieved when a van appears tomorrow and we find out we won’t have to sleep on the street.
Thanks for the messages and encouragement!
Daphne
