The day would be a wet one, rain was forecast all day. After breakfast we headed towards the old town. On our previous wanderings we had noticed that many churches and municipal buildings were having concerts at various times of day. Today, being wet seemed like an ideal opportunity to sample some of them. There would be a free concert, featuring a choir from Willingham School, Wimbledon, UK appearing at St Nicholas Church in the Old Town Square at 2pm, ideal! Also we bought tickets to see a concert in the Smetana Hall in the Municipal House. That would be something to look forward to. So having organised our cultural events we headed off for a coffee in a lovely little café hidden in a small square not far from Wencelas Square. From there we walked a little further and found a sandwich bar where we could shelter from the rain as well as fill our tummies. By now it was almost time for the first concert so we headed back to St Nicholas Church. The interior of the church was in the Baroque style with a magnificent chandelier casting light into all corners of the church. The choir were busy rehearsing when we entered, so we could not take our seats. Eventually though, when they ventured out into the rain for a photo call, we were allowed to take our places. The concert lasted about 50 minutes and covered a wide programme of sea shanties, modern music, church music etc. During one of the songs there was a thud as something hit the floor nearby. I thought nothing more about it and after the concert left and walked across the square. Something was missing though! My camera! The “thud” had been the camera falling out of my pocket. We dashed straight back to the church. The ladies at the desk understood what I was wanting and they directed me to the ticket seller outside the door. She opened her drawer and there was my camera. I thanked her profusely, and guess what? She smiled!
We returned to the hotel to rest for a while before heading out again later for something to eat. This time we chose the Pelikan Restaurant near Wencelas Square. We wanted typical Czech food, so we both had a soup followed by Goulash with potatoes. The meal was lovely and the service excellent in this glorious, somewhat old fashioned restaurant. After another return to the hotel to watch the news it was time to go to our next concert. The Smetana Hall was magnificent with its Art Nouveau style. The concert contained music by Mozart, Vivaldi, Grieg, Smetana and Dvorak. It was lovely and with so many concerts to choose from in Prague, it will be good to return one day to sample some more. After the concert we returned to the hotel to use the bar for a few more hours before heading for bed.
