There are no VIP buses to Phonsavan so its strictly public bus or private car or a plane ride. I took public bus and its 8 hours of sardine jammed in, twisty, people puking ride. A patience stealer. The town is small with some noodle shops and an internet cafe and a handful of guesthouses from$2 to $8. Travel trips to the Jar sites are easily found and there is also a bank for money exchange. The weather is great (late Feb) and the smoke from the bush fires hadn't arrived yet. Cool at night. You get what you pay for here and if you opt for a $2 room its a cold, concrete box with a hard bed. Bathroom outside filled with ants and only cold water that works some?time. Oddly enough, I missed the bus to Vientiane and had to stay another night and right by the bus station was a great modern, comfortable hotel with all the fixings for $7 a night. Once you get off the bus just look North and you cant miss it, the only building that looks new.
