San Antonio...Tex-Mex to Die For!

In a recent travel magazine, I recently read that San Diego was recognized as the place to find the "Best Mexican Food outside of Mexico". While I'm sure this is a special honor for lovers of Mexican food, those who know "Tex-Mex" cuisine (the spicier, tastier cousin to regular Mexican food), know to visit Texas and its second largest city San Antonio for the countries BEST!

We recently took the company plane (Southwest Airlines for those who don't know) to visit family, eat food and have some fun. As a city, San Antonio is one of the most accessible. Easy to navigate, drive and centrally planned for visitors. I can attest to that statement because I lived there for 15 years and served on their Visitors & Convention Bureau for a number of those. There are the typical tourists "Must Do's": Drive-by the Alamo, Peruse the Spectacular Riverwalk, Tour the Tower of the Americas etc. A few of my favorites are to: Taste the Mango Ice Cream at the Menger Hotel you will love it! (A Bill Clinton favorite. Order at the Teddy Roosevelt Bar for quicker service), Visit the ROOT candle store (a hole in the wall) but has the best smelling, longest-lasting candles you inexpensively can find. Buy a box of Segovia Mexican Candies at their store on Guadalupe Street (if you love pecans & caramel, you'll thank me later). You have not lived until you have visited SA during "Fiesta"(April) when the town is most alive, vibrant and Festive for the annual 10-day celebration.

A trip to San Antonio is not permitted without trying the varying degrees of tasty foods. You can find Tex-Mex food all over the city. I will not recommend any particular one, but just ask anyone and they will share their favorites. A few of my personal favorite selections include; Carne Guisada tacos, any Puffy Taco, Baracho(drunken)beans, Enchilada con Carne, Tres Leche (dessert) to name a few. Where to find the best of those is where the fun begins.

If barbeque is what you desire ask the locals for the best brisket or smoked sausage. What about hamburgers? Now I'm not talking about the franchised version of frozen meat, but specialized stores that are spectacular. Ask the locals for their favorite and you will not be disappointed about your decision in San Antonio.

Dallas may have its Cowboys and Houston it's Heat, but if it’s great food and fun you are after, San Antonio, Texas is the place!
