Living in Finland as a European student!

First you need a resident permit (oleskelulupa)if you stay more than 3 months which you will get at the local police (4O euros).

You don't need any resident permit if you stay less than 3 months, but if you do, you need to register your right to reside in Finland. If you stay one year or more, then you can get the permanently registration which allows you to have half price on your travel card in Helsinki and/or its region. In any case you will get personal identity number.

Make sure that you have your european health insurance card if you want to be covered under your your home country's social security system.

My appartment (HOAS Housing) is in Pasila (Helsinki's district), at 5 minutes from the center by train. (www.hoas.fi). From the time you entered your flat, you have about 1 week to sign your tenancy agreement.

To open your bank account you need a passport (yes! Even if you're from the European Union!)

Finally, you have to register for getting your student card (Lyyra Card) which allows you to have discounts on lunch at the Uni Cafés and 50% on your trips by train (buses if the trip is longer than 80 km)in whole Finland. The card costs 14,50€ and you get it about 3 weeks after you applied for it...
