A Different Take On New York
New York is a place I've wanted to visit for the longest time. Somewhere that is constantly talked about and, being a London lad, I needed to see what all the fuss was about. As a jazz musician I was keen to spend a couple of night in clubs such as Blue Note or Birdland, but unfortunately as with all ports seen from a cruise ship I only had a few hours to explore one of the worlds largest cities.
We arrived before sunrise, but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words so check out the photos to the right to see our beautiful Sunday morning arrival into Manhattan.
Now there is absolutely no way to see New York in a day so I didn't try and opted to immerse myself in the local street life instead. There was a festival in progress as I wandered around town snapping pictures as I went. Colourful confetti fell through the air and music played over an impressive sound system. I was with some friends who were keen to visit the New York music stores so not knowing where to go I tagged along with them.
The music street was fantastic and I spent my time trying out a couple of 5 and 6 string basses, and looking at the memorabilia from back in the day when the Beatles were still together and at the top of the music tree. I found a music technology store and bought a great little DJ mixing console, but managed to lose the friends in was tagging along with in the process.
We had split up to search the respective music stores on opposite sides of the street and when I appeared on the pavement with my new purchase none of them were to be seen. I wandered around for a while hoping to bump into them, but to no avail I would have to find my own way home. The place they had talked about eating at was closed down so I headed back to the sounds of the festival in progress. I quickly figured out a route back to the ship and even had some time on my hands.
I ventured to Madison Square garden for a quick peek at the infamous building and grabbed a slice of New York pizza on the way - something I had heard was worth a try. I’m delighted to say, it was.
