One day before we were supposed to fly out of Belize and into Guatemala to begin studying Spanish, I came down with a bout of pinkeye which I promptly gave to John. Pinkeye in the U.S. means a small irritation and some itchiness, but pinkeye in Belize meant monster red eyes, giant eyeboogers and general malaise. So by the next evening when we arrived at the airport, they took one look at us, called us contagious, and refused to let us on the plane until we came back with a doctor's note saying we were clean! We sadly and redly watched our reservations for the hostel in Guate City, for the hostel in Xela the next day and possibly the tuition fee for the week of school come to naught as we climbed back into a taxi to take us back to hot, humid Belize City with Annie Lennox blasting Sweet Dreams Are Made of This on the car radio. What to do next? Eat at JambaJerk and figure out a plan. We kept to ourselves so as not to infect anyone else and decided to hightail it out of Belize via bus so we could lay low and get healthy in a less costly country. Using eyedrops and sunglasses we managed to get across the border and into our own room where we've been laying low ever since. From what we've seen of Guatemala so far, it's beautiful! We are looking forward to seeing it with clean eyes soon!
