The planning

This trip will be classified as a Bike, Kayak and Camp extravaganza. Pamela graciously gave me a "kitchen pass" for this week-long solo adventure. Let's see if I can last a whole week of camping.

The plan is to visit a variety of state parks throughout Georgia where kayaking and biking is plentiful.

The first night will be spent at Ft. Clinch State Park in Fernadina Beach Florida (almost Georgia), just across the St. Mary's estuary from Cumberland Island Georgia. Here I will be able to take advantage of biking in historic Fernadina Beach town and enjoy the fabulous park surrounded on 3 sides by water and sandy beaches. Typically this park is booked up weeks in advance, but periodic checking of the availability landed me a cancellation to grab.

From St. Augustine I will make my way north toward Augusta via U.S. highway 1. Eventually heading north specifically to Elijah Clark State Park on the enormous Clark's Hill Reservoir that separates Georgia from South Carolina over which was once the Savannah River. There is plenty of kayaking and biking in the area, especially with a pair of South Carolina parks across the lake.

From Elijah Clark there is about a three hour car ride north to Moccacin Creek State Park on Lake Rabun at nearby Tallulah gorge. This is in some good foothill country. I will be spending 2 nights at this location because I want to explore scenic Tallulah Gorge, as well as a duckie-raft down the Natahala River about 1.5 hours away in North Carolina (the 14 foot Kayak stays home on that day).

The next travel segment is across the top of the state then down to Red Top Mountain State Park just north of Marietta. Again this will be for 2 nights because of all the available kayaking on Carter's Lake and the opportunity to ride the Silver Meteor bike trail from Symrna to the Alabama border.

Next entry: Atlantic winds prevail, but the biking goes on!
