Day of rest for Mom

Mom had a terrible night last night. I could hear her coughing down the hall and began throwing up around 3 a.m. She hadn’t eaten too much in the last couple of days and was complaining of cold symptoms. But we knew she was putting a lot of stress on her new esophagus and she just felt awful by the time everyone got up in the morning. By the time I got out of bed at 7:30 I assumed that she would probably need to take it easy today so I didn’t make any plans for us to do much of anything.

I got dressed and drove into town to do some work on my laptop while they slept. The tourist information office in town was the only place I’ve found so far that had internet access and wanted to check my mail and do a little online banking. I was able to give a little assistance when their internet access went down and the lady behind the desk really didn’t know a thing about computers. It took me about 15 minutes, but I did manage to get their computers back online and was able to finish what I was doing.

Mom and Dad were both up when I got back to the room and asked how they were feeling. Mom looked like her head was really hurting so Dad went with me down to the local Pharmacy to see if we could get something to relieve her symptoms. The cough syrup we picked up yesterday was just too thick for her to swallow and even though she said it tasted like honey, it was way too sweet for her too. But we managed to find some really good lozenges that she liked and worked well too as well as a really good nose spray to help her breath. She seemed more concerned about where we were going to go today, as if she was more concerned about ruining our vacation than resting. But I was feeling a little exhausted myself and thought a day of rest would do all of us some good, since the last thing I wanted was to catch whatever they had.

In the afternoon, we did decide to get dressed and walked to the end of our street to the local pub we’ve come to enjoy. Michaela was working again and sat with us for a while, looking at all the pictures from Neuschwanstein we took yesterday. She was also very helpful in going through every item they had on their menu and explaining it to us. Mom finally got to order the Spatzel she’s been wanting for days now and Dad and I both ordered a great steak, topped with grilled onions and a creamy garlic butter. I’m getting hungry again just thinking about it.

After a couple of beers and a great meal, we were all pretty worn out and none of us could keep our eyes open for much longer. I could tell, as nighttime fell, cold symptoms seemed to get worse for both Mom and Dad and after deciding on an itinerary for Saturday, we all “hit the sack” before 9 p.m. One thing Dad really wanted to do while he was here was to visit the concentration camp at Dachau. I told everyone in order for us to make the English movie that played at 11 a.m, we would all need to be dressed, fed and out the door no later than 9 a.m.
