Bahar Dar - Day 2 - The Millenium Eve (Again)

Toady we awoke to Sandra & Brads scrambled eggs. After packing away and "flapping the dishes" we arranged to take a small boat for 50Birr a piece to the islands around lake Tana where there are lots of 13th century monastaries. On the way we saw our first hippo in the reeds but it was quite far away. Then 2 minutes later we saw a big rock which we soon discovered to have flappy ears - it was a mummy hippo and a younger hippo within about 15 meteres of the boat. It soon saw us off and we werent gonna hang around to see what damage it could do!

The monasteries were ok they had some nice paintings of bible stories. We also went to the start of the Blue Nile river.

Spent the afternoon wandering around a local market and later started the celebrations. The hotel boss invited us to have a few beers on the house which got us talking about the fact that unless youre on holiday in ethiopia at that time - only a small handfull of people on the planet would have got to celebrate two milleniums ever! We then we went to a proper local ethiopian bar which was jam packed. Had a surprise in the loo - there was a Dik-Dik (a really small deer) tied up. It rained in the toilet because of the really shoddy roof and so it kept hiding under my legs to stay dry. Got very drunk dancing the "Ethiopian way" and got chatting to a local guy who I thought was being friendly when he kept saying "I Like You" but when he asked me to go somewhere else with him i got the distinct impression he may have been a bandit!

Eventually after singing lots of Man Utd Chants we left for the hotel. On the way I gave a shoulder carry to a little boy - Ive never heard anyone laugh so much in my life - just goes to show that simple things can mean a lot when you have nothing.
