And in the Beginning.........

The beauty of coming to teach in England when we did was that we would end up with another set of end of year holidays (six weeks worth!). After what turned out to be a very long and tiring term, we were just about ready for a break. We'd made a decision to work the entire term and live on the cheap so we could put the pounds away for the extended break and do something really worthwhile.

Our plan was to spend about thirty days trying to complete a whirlwind tour of Western Europe. Our aim was to visit France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic and Belgium. Our mode of transport would be rail.

With all of this in mind, we decided to purchase Interrail passes (like Eurail passes but only for European residents of at least six months, they get you further and are slightly cheaper) which would allow us thirty days unlimited travel. We also decided that to give us more flexibility (and make it all that much more exciting) we wouldn't pre-book any accommodation; we'd simply turn up and hope for the best.

Therefore with passports, rail passes and maps in hand, we set off on the 31st July (backpacks loaded up - we had to look like typical hiking tourists!) and the results of our adventures are contained in the accounts that follow.

Next entry: Destination....... Paris
