Bouncing around

Our first trip was so much fun!

Ed came and picked us up with his truck, the one the Canadian team painted last year. The kids were pretty excited when they saw that one side of the truck has two levels for sitting. The little kids were sitting above some of the other kids with their legs dangling down. They thought that was just fabulous.

The kids sang songs and giggled as we bounced along. You see, roads in Haiti are like the road leading out of the Canview drive in: full of tire eating holes. They didn’t mind; the bouncing made the ride way more fun! Try clapping along to a song while your body is thrashing from side to side. It’s almost impossible, but actually pretty fun!

I was surprised by the kids’ reaction when we first walked into Ed’s orphanage. Usually our kids are loud, boisterous and outgoing for the most part. They were so shy when we walked in. There were over 70 kids sitting in the yard and not one was making a peep! That only lasted about 5 minutes, but it was still quite surprising.

From there the kids were split into two groups: boys and girls. The boys went swimming first and the girls stayed at Ed’s to play games, sing songs and paint their nails. We later switched and the boys played soccer and ate sugar cane while the girls swam.

We ate popcorn and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The kids were all pretty sad when the truck showed up again to pick them up. We hadn’t even gotten past the gate when the kids were asking when we could come back again!

I love my job.
