The Set Up

2007-09-10, Garrison, United States

Hmm.

To start off, this is an attempt at a blog of an environmental studies major's September to May travels with the International Honors Program entitled Rethinking Globalization. The gist of the program is, to quote their website, "the opportunity to meet some of the world's most important critics of the notion of development and to see for oneself the consequences of a globalized economy that has now reached into every part of the world, affecting the lives of every single individual."

A college-level endeavor, we'll be taking a series of 8 classes totaling 32 credits (hell yes) all of which take place on the move. The curriculum draws from anthropology, ecology, political economy, and environmental policy. The classes, in case you were interested, are as follows: Cases and Issues in Environmental Policy, Comparative Social Movements, Issues of International Development and Economics I & II, Ecology and Comparative Conservation Practices I & II, and Anthropology Field Methods I & II.

As far as how the traveling and living will go I have a somewhat limited knowledge of specifics. What I can understand so far is that we're computerless, phoneless, and essentially required to bring a backpack, some clothing, bug-spray and a pen. Apparently, it is to our advantage to pack sparingly as there are going to be times in which we are going to be hiking out to our various homestays, or are going to be moving ourselves from city to city, including during our four, seven to ten-day vacations that we'll have in each country.

Saturday we're congregating in Washington D.C., and after a summer of waitressing, resting up, and obtaining all of my visas, mandatory shots, and pills I am now beginning to pack for the next year of my life in Tanzania, India, New Zealand, and Mexico... wish me luck.

Next entry: D.C. is alright with me
