I spoke with Rick Burnette of the Upland Holistic
Develpment Project (UHDP, you can do a web search and
find the site quite easily if interested) on the phone
yesterday regarding volunteer options starting in
February and he sounded quite excited to have me out
there. Contrary to my concerns it is a free
volunteership (I won't have to pay, beyond my own
personal expenses) and there is no set time frame. It
sounded as if he was excited and gracious for me to
bring whatever I have to offer to the UHDP.
He also said that our focus of work would be very
flexible with my own interests. In the intervening
months we are to consider possible fields of focus.
One possibility that he had mentioned was using GPS to
plot their range of work in the area, so that would
include a lot of time out in the mountains and
villages. He also mentioned the possibility for
conducting further direct research in the villages
with Hill Tribe people.
I am excited beyond expression about these
prospects. Unfortunately it will keep me away from my
friends family and loved ones for a longer duration,
but should I hope be a critical foundation for the
future of my profession and desired life.
