On the 17th of August we left Buffalo and travelled to Niagara Falls on the way to Toronto, Canada.
We had read that both the US and Canadian sides of the falls provide varying views and excursions. So we set off with a view to stopping on both sides and naturally the American first.
Strangely though, we had a lot of trouble finding it and almost crossed into Canada too early, only noticing the last US exit just in time. After taking that exit we found ourselves in a very run down city and realised this was the American city of Niagara, which had just a few viewing points and a hotel right by the border at the Rainbow bridge. So we opted instead to take the bridge and as we crossed got our first glimpse of the impressive falls. Once on the Canadian side it was a different place altogether with some great views, access to the Maid of the Mist boat (which we had been told by an American tourist centre that we could not get on the Canadian side of the falls) and some lovely gardens to walk through. There was also several hotels, casinos and other attractions on offer.
We parked up and walked along the cliff enjoying the view of the falls, impressed by its obvious fierce power, and began to wonder why a sixty year old teacher back in 1901 would go over in a barrel!
We then got on to the Maid of the Mist boat and sailed into the heart of the Horseshoe falls and got up close to the pounding water.
We then ate lunch in a restaurant providing an aerial view of the falls before heading on to Toronto and spending hours in traffic moving across the Toronto city limits.
