This morning we went out on a World Heritage cruise through Macquarie Harbour to Hell’s Gate and up the Gordon River. Hell’s Gate is the narrow and dangers strait where the Macquarie Harbour meets the Southern Ocean. The Gate is the smallest harbour strait in the world and many ships have been wrecked on the surrounding reefs and rocks. On our way up the Gordon River we stopped at Sarah Island for a 1 hour guided tour of the first convict penal settlement in Tasmania but very little of the original buildings are left. We also went to the Heritage Landing, home of a 2000 year old Huon pine tree. When the boat cruise ended, we visited a saw mill and got to watch an old fashion saw cutting a Huon pine piece of scrap wood. Along the Gordon River we saw fish farms where the locals raise trout and salmon.
Driving to Hobart we went through Queenstown, an old mining town, and to visit Nelson Falls. It was a long drive on the A10 across Tasmania from the west to the east coast and we saw lots of animals including wombats, tassie devils, and wallabies. Unfortunately one wallaby decided to commit suicide by running into the Nugget and Kelly had her first road kill ever. However we did arrive safely in Hobart.
