Picking up the car from the airport, we got lost as soon as we drove out of the rental yard. Half an hour of frustration & trying to read a shocking map they gave us, we got onto the freeway. Now let me tell you, there maybe posted speed limits, and if you abide by the limits, you are more likely to be in an accident. Ads could only get the Hyundai Getz up to 155klms on the freeway (in the slow lane mind you) with a boot load of luggage & the air con on full, crazy greeks all passing us as if we were standing still. A few sports bikes passed everyone...they were really flying!
Occupying a knockout location in the Pelopenese region of Greece on a small port beneath the towering bulk of the Palamidi Fortres, Nafplio is so pretty. The narrow streets of the old town, graced with elegant venetian houses & gracious neoclassical mansions.
The town is situated on the Argolic Gulf and was the first capital of Greece after independence & has been a major port since the Bronze Age. So strategic was the position, that it had three fortresses - the massive principal fortress of Palamidi, the smaller Akronafplia and the diminutive Bourtzi on an islet (amazing pics).
