The Best Beach Around???

2007-07-01, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

I have to say, I was a bit disappointed with San Juan del Sur. We were told (by many different people) that it was the most beautiful and best beach in Nicaragua. It was nice, but definitely not the best I’ve seen. We (Ann – professor, other Ann, Roxanna – English teacher from Costa Rica, and me) arrived late Saturday evening after spending the day at Mombacho. Exhausted, we found a hotel, La Casa Blanca, which of course had the accompanying theme poster. It was nice, with air conditioned rooms, a luxury I’ve lived without for quite some time. We went to find dinner and found nothing much, other than some bars that served food. The food was good, but the atmosphere definitely left us wanting. As the evening progressed it became clear that San Juan del Sur is simply a playground for rich 19 year olds to party with their parents’ money. They became increasingly obnoxious, so we just went back to our hotel and hung out there. Unfortunately, sleeping was nearly impossible, because my room was right outside the pool, which was filled with more obnoxious drunk people who felt the need to scream “cannonball!” about every five seconds, followed by a huge splashing sound. They finally went to bed around 1:30 and I promptly also fell asleep. It didn’t last long though. The electricity kept going on and off, meaning the air conditioner didn’t really work, and there was no fan. Finally Roxanna and I just slept with our door open so we could at least get a breeze. Honestly, sometimes low-tech is the best way to go! The next day we did some shopping for horribly overpriced souvenirs and hung out at the beach for a little while. It was pretty, with the fishing boats in the distance. It’s also a great place to swim and the water felt soooo good. I have to say though; Playa Roca is still my favorite beach in Nicaragua.
