A week after I returned from the outer reef diving, I had an intensive class down on Heron Island off of Gladstone. It was 10 days of field work and good experience with experimental designs. We got to collect poop from sea cucumbers, dissect epaulette sharks, analyze dinoflagellates from acropora and do a lot of snorkeling. Snorkeling in the harbor provided views of wobbegong sharks, eagle rays and blacktips. It was an incredible experience with the combination of science and the social atmosphere. I got to know many people from my classes that I only knew casually before. I hope my career leads me to places like Heron with crystal clear water and sand that feels like pillows.
