Cloudy Beach Day and Doctor Fish

2007-06-28, Sanya, China

When I woke up that morning, paradise wasn’t as paradise-y any more. At least the weather wasn’t. It wasn’t exactly raining, but very cloudy – though that couldn’t keep me from going to the beach. But it kept me from getting a nice tan. Grr. So the morning I spent on the beach, but in the afternoon I went to the Nan Tian Hot Springs, the most famous spa in China. The name suggests that the water would be very very hot, but as the weather outside wasn’t too hot, it was actually okay. They have heaps of pools, I think about 60 different ones, though the majority of them only sits a few people, so the area is not that huge. But the pools are nice and they have stuff like coffee pools and vanilla pools. Sanya is incredibly popular with the Russian tourists, most signs are actually in Russian rather than English and I even got approached in Russian – both by the Russians and the Chinese vendors. But anyway, I think the Hot Springs are on their must-see list, because there were even more Russians there than in Sanya. And while I was soaking in one of the pools, a Korean guy started to talk to me. We chatted and he asked whether I had already tried fish therapy. I hadn’t. Turns out that the Spa is famous for one certain pool full of doctor fish. So if you sit in it for a few moments, the fish will come and start nibbling away your dead skin. It’s not for the ticklish people, and I had a bit of trouble getting used to it, but after a while it feels okay. Weird, but okay. It’s supposed to be very healthy because it takes all the toxins away. I don’t know how healthy it is for the fish, but then it’s probably not much of a difference whether they nibble on humans rather than on their fish buddies.
